No cabe duda que la politica tanto del gobierno y sobretodo de la Iglesia es una podredumbre este es el testimonio vivo de lo que siempre he creido y leido. Por otro lado el padre Charlie yo lo conoc� y he de confesar que en un principio a mi se me hizo un gringo pedante, pero a traves del tiempo y de haberlo conocido a el y su obra, no tengo mas que respetos para el, yo indirectamente lo conoc� por mi trabajo y me pareci� que lo que le hicieron al padre fue una canallada, y celebro que ya haya podido superar ese episodio tan feo que le hicieron pasar. SOBRE LA NOVELA (historica) no podia estar mejor narrada , es adictiva se las recomiendo

Un amigo me recomend� que leyera este libro y me pareci� super interesante. Es impresionante ver el ejemplo de un alma que se preocupa por los mas necesitados, un verdadero hombre de Dios. No puedo creer como una persona le ha puesto una estrella, no dejen que el negativisimo los confunda, les SUPER recomiendo este libro. Me encanta el titulo del libro "Y Era de Noche" ya que hace referencia al pasaje del evangelio en el que Judas traiciono a Cristo (Witty). Life changing book!!

No easy answers

Choir Boy compares well with classic books about teenagers that aren't necessarily for teenagers, like Bridge Over Terabithia or Carson McCullers' Member of the Wedding, and then goes way beyond. It's a fast-moving and complicated story, lyrical and musically structured, scary, hilarious, and hopeful.

Everyone will read it to be "about" gender and queerness, and it is, but I hope people will also see another story, about the possibility of living in uncertainty. Berry and the other characters have outside influences pushing them into particular paths of identity or behavior, but none of them ultimately are locked in to those paths. Commitment to art, above all, is what puts Berry in conflict with society. I listened to cds of choir boys singing anthems while reading the book, and let the philosophical and religious questions percolate.

In short, there is no genre this book fits. It might be read by transgender teenagers as a sort of equivalent to the "difficult issue" young adult book, something that goes beyond Avi, or Betty Miles: books where a kid stands up for some issue like sex education or not saying the Pledge of Allegiance, without understanding that it's going to create a hell of a firestorm beyond their control. But the book's depths put it way beyond that Scholastic Paperback "emperor has no clothes" simplification of what it's like to be a kid, and far beyond the didactic messages of the usual coming-out memoir. Choir Boy is deeply respectful of kids. Reading it made me look back at my own teenage years and the choices I made, and re-evaluate the meaning of some of my own actions.

Wonderful!

I loved this book. I read it almost a month ago and I find myself still thinking about Berry's world. Sad, funny, achingly touching like adolescence itself, it's really not easy to describe. Berry is a twelve year old who is on the verge of everything: a new voice, body, thoughts, feelings, friends, social standing, family; every inch of Berry is starting to change. Author Charlie Anders has done a wonderful job of bringing the reader back to that time, when everything and nothing about life was simple. I look forward to reading it again!

Sound and comprehensive

I'm not a great reader of English literature apart from Dickens. This book provided an excellent background for me for all the things I've missed and probably will never get around to reading. But at least I now know the scope of my ignorance, and that is no bad thing.

Good as an overview, but a little vague.

I ordered this item in preparation for the CLEP English Literature exam, hoping that it would give me a brief overview of chief movements and works. The book did cover most major works and authors of prose, drama, and poetry. It is not very long, and has helpful timelines of historic events, authors, and works. However, I disliked this book for two reasons:

1. This book is rather vague. The descriptions of the major movements of literature are fairly good, but the descriptions of authors and works are very subjective, derived mostly from the author's impressions of them rather than dwelling on the descriptions of them. They are not discussed in-depth, and often key facts about the authors or works have been left out completely.

2. This book is rather hard to read. I have good reading comprehension skills, but I often had a difficult time following the author's chain of thought (and sometimes I couldn't follow it at all). The wording could be much plainer and ideas could be linked together much more effectively.

In summary, I gave this book two stars because I felt that it deserved it for having touched upon all major movements and authors. However, this book is not one I would recommend for gaining an understanding of English literature.
