Very often its the first thing that tells you whether or not a film is worth giving a look; sometimes, it turns out to be considerably better than the film itself. But in these days of flagrant, unimaginative photoshopping, its a part of the film fan experience that has long been threatening to die out. VHS Video Cover Art: 1980s to Early 1990s

I think anyone growing up in the 80s will love this book. Well if you are a movie fan of course, but who isn't? It wasquite nice to browse through the pages and look at all the wonderful (and sometimes quite weird) covers. Mostly are these movies I have never seen, hell mostly never heard of and I thought I was a movie buff. But it was great to read through this book and I got a bit nostalgic. Just think it wasn't many years ago I had a collection of VHS now I just have a couple left...

Anyway it was a nice book, perfect if you are a movie buff that likes old movies and perhaps especially good for those that want to see more obscure movies. I added some screenshots to show of the pages look like.

Like A Fantastic Journey Through An Old Video Store

Though I really enjoyed this book, it should be mentioned that the VHS cover art depicted within is from the UK. Being from the US, I did not recognize most of the art so this was not the nostalgia jam I was looking forward to. Nevertheless, this book is so well put together with each page showing full front, back and spine of the covers. I really hope that someone makes a book featuring American VHS cover art using this same format. It's a fantastic journey through a library of exciting, fantastic and lurid films with box art so enticing you'll want to take them to the checkout counter and rent them today!

some of my happiest memories are looking over the boxes at the dollar ...

As a kid, some of my happiest memories are looking over the boxes at the dollar video store. The excitement and promise of untold horrors or great adventures, pulling me in, making it impossible not to rent anything with a badass cover. Luckily they had 5 movies for a dollar Tuesdays. Later I realized how many films I loved, not because they were good movies, but because of the package that surrounded it. So many childhood nightmares spawned from the cover art...years later as an adult I'd re-watch and realize the entire film was lit so poorly I couldn't even see the monster! Yet the art painted a picture that still haunts my dreams. A VHS Box cover, telling a story so insane and creative, it was often better than the movie. So the movies were dismissed, and the art sometimes lost. I still have my VHS collection, but this book goes way beyond that. Fellow monster kids, video hounds, anyone who wore their creature features guide to the binding...this is awesome. If you love movies, get this book. I first encountered Tom Hodge "The Dude" through his amazing hand drawn movie posters. His stuff stood out at a quality level that seems to be scarce these days in the poster world. Makes sense he would compile such an awesome volume that makes me feel like I'm back in the video store again, raiding the dusty shelves, finding secret gems. Red says check it out!

Great guide to Autodesk Maya! My only thought - a Glossary in back would be very handy. I'm new to 3D work, and would've liked a "quick reference" to the many unfamiliar terms and expressions.

A mixed bag

Initially when this book came out, there were no project files on the book's website, which was very confusing.

Following the instructions step by step is tedious and having to continually go between book and project makes for slow going.

No coverage of important issues like linear color workflow.

A lot of emphasis on tedious, labor-intensive polygonal modeling.

It has coverage of pretty much every major topic of CG, though, so when supplemented with further resources, it's helpful.

About the Author

D. Brendan Nagle is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Southern California, where he had appointments in the departments of history and classics.� He was research associate at the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1970 and 1999.� From 1976 to 1983 he was chairman of USC’s History Department.� He is the author or coauthor of six books and has published over 50 articles and reviews in such journals as: American Historical Review, American Journal of Archaeology, Ancient History Bulletin, Athenaeum, Historia, Journal of American Ethnic History, Polis, L’Antiquit� classique, Review of Metaphysics, Rheinisches Museum f�r Philologie, and Transactions of the American Philological Society.� He received USC’s Social Science Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1984.

Great for reluctant readers

This books story will captivate the most reluctant readers. I used this as a read aloud for my fifth grade class and they all fell in love with it. It masterfully uses comedy as it deals with some pretty serious issues such as being awkward, living in the shadow of other siblings, and dealing with a sibling's major injury. I have purchased and lost this book several times but I love to have it on my classroom shelf.

my 10 year old loves this book

My 10 year old daughter usually doesn't like reading, but she read keeps re-reading this book and raves it as the best book ever. I haven't seen her this excited so I'm guessing that this is really a fun story that captures her imagination.

I bought the paperback and now wish I had bought the kindle version since the book is already wearing out.

Part of the Virginia young reader program and strongly recommended.

PLEASE: Read this book IF you visit Lijiang China!!

I was in Lijiang (the book spells the town, Likiang), a UNESCO World History Site in 2008.
This book is set in this wonderful area in the 1940's, ending when the Maoist Chinese infiltrate and overtake the South in 1948 and conquer the country in 1949.
Even if you have never been to this area of the world this book is a gem. It is as close to Shangra-la as is possible. (I also read "Lost Horizon" while I stayed in Lijiang)
"Forbidden Kingdom" is an incredible verbal picture painted by a Western Man's (Russian/French) first-hand account of the changes that happened during the 1940's in the Naxi Chinese area. Written during the time when this "Silk Road" Town was the ONLY access point for outside goods to China during WWII. The Japanese held China's entire Coastal Region, WWII ended, then the Maoist infiltration came into this town.

I bought this book in the Lijiang airport, and would be surprised if it was sold outside Yunnan. That's a shame, because it's a fascinating account of a unique culture that no longer exists, at least as it did a century ago. A must for anyone visiting this area of China if you can find it.

THIS IS A BOOK FOR PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS - LAYMAN, COMPOSER, OR ADVANCED MUSIC LOVER. "Why should one have to learn or need guidance on how to listen to what one is hearing?" is the question that William Schuman asks in his Preface. "The answer is simple. Listening to music is a skill that is acquired through experience and learning. Knowledge enhances enjoyment."
What makes What to Listen for in Music so invaluable is that it is the ONLY book on musical appreciation written by a GREAT COMPOSER. "This is a composer's book," Aaron Copland states. "Given the chance, every composer would like to know two very important things about anyone who takes himself seriously as a music lover...1. Are you hearing everything that is going on? [and] 2. Are you really being sensitive to it?"
The only shortcoming of this book is that it should be taken as part of a class to make sure that one gets everything out of it. It would be great if it came with a CD of all the examples to which Copland makes reference. However, each chapter does end with a list of "recommended listening." To make specific points, Copland does include sheet music (but I didn't read this book sitting next to my piano). However, these problems are minimal, considering we live in an age of the cheap CDs and music downloads.
Copland covers EVERY aspect of music, starting with "how we listen," - on the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. He then goes on to explain to us the Four Elements of Music - Melody, Rhythm, Harmony, and Tone Color. We find out about all the musical instruments, their history and classifications. We find out about all the genres in music - Sectional Form, Variation Form, Fugal Form, Sonata Form, Free Form. Did you know that Sonata Form includes symphonies as well? And that symphonies grew out of operatic overtures?
This is a book that bears re-reading. A lot of technical jargon gets bandied about and, although Copland does his best to explain it all, it still gets a tad confusing. I advise reading this book, listening to a LOT of music, and then reading it again. I know my own knowledge and appreciation of music has grown from reading it. Now I DO have an idea of the nuances I should be listening for in a Mozart piano concerto.

A good introduction to classical music

Given the complexity of classical music, it is not surprising that many people find it confusing and intimidating. With all those terms like "sonata-allegro form" and "contrapuntal texture", it's easy to feel intimidated when trying to make sense of an hour long symphony. Fortunately, Aaron Copland does a good job explaining the basics of how music is structured.

This book covers music, specifically classical music, from several different angles. These include the sensual, expressive, and musical aspects, but also the way elements like rhythm, harmony, and melody interact to form music. Copland also covers musical texture from simple unaccompanied melodies to the complexities of counterpoint.

Copland also gives a basic overview of the history of classical music and how it evolved from unaccompanied religious chants to organum to counterpoint and accompanied melodies. He also mentions how composers do their work and his perspectives and experiences with composition.

On the negative side, the book is very dated, to say the least, refering to 30s era records and "the rhythm-based music of savage tribesmen". However, that shouldn't stop

An excellent and very comprehensive text

I find it incredible that this text has never been reviewed. It is extremely good with very good coverage of background material which was useful to me as a convert (of sorts) to electrical engineering, but which has also been of use in my later "professional" (of sorts) use, as a good many projects can involve going back and reviewing basic material, such as propagation of specific frequencies.

I have used it as a suplement to Rappaport's book on wireless communications.

It has been a few years since I have looked closely at it and that was in an a prior edition to this, so I will return soon to offer a more complete review.

The author is also a first-class chap.

OK, so i'm back to add a little more.

The edition that I have is the 6th edition and since the "See inside book" function on Amazon doesn't seem to be active for this book, I'll add sections and some comments.
1. Intro. including history, digital and analog, block diagram of communications system, frequency allocations, propagation, channel capacity and coding. This background material on propagation and frequency allocation was helpful to me in terms of completing work, which was not incredibly advanced or difficult, but which required some background knowledge which I didn't have concerning propagation. Of course there is always Wikipedia for background info now.
2. Signals and spectra. Standard material but treated well, such as power spectral densities, Fourier series, linear systems background, bandlimited signals and sampling.
3. Baseband pulse and digital signaling, including Pulse code modulation, digital signaling and vector representation of signals, intersymbol interference and more.
4. Bandpass signaling including complex envelope representation, spectrum of bandpass signals, bandpass sampling theorem, nonlinear distortion, filters and amplifiers, mixers, up and down converters, phase locked loops and transmitters and receivers, and even software defined radios (maybe this is expanded in later editions as it is "hot").
5. AM, FM and digital modulated systems
6. Random processes and spectral analysis
7. Performance of communication systems in the presence of noise, including Prob of error for binary signaling in the Gaussian channel for white noise and matched filtering and colored noise and matched filtering; coherent and noncoherent detection; QPSK; and more.
8. Wired and wireless communication systems, including material on standards (from the late 90s for the copy that I have, presumably updated in newer editions for LTE and whatnot)
Appendices on math, random processes and probability and some standards and terminology for comms. (again, late 90s for my edition, including some IEEE standards (ethernet, presumably expanded now); ISO/OSI Network layers; data link control protocols (TCP/IP, ATM) and an Appendix on getting started with MATLAB.

Again, this is for the 6th edition, 1999 or 2000 release.

Dr Couch does an excellent job of introducing the reader to analog & digital communications. Presenting an overview of such a subject is a daunting task
...yet he does so masterfully.
An invaluable part of my references and of others' personal "libraries." This book is an enduring cornerstone for understanding modern communications.

Do not rely on this book as an introduction!

If you are new to communications, you may want to get a more in-depth exploration of the topics Couch covers (particularly the mathematics). I took this course at the University of Florida (although not with Couch). We were required to buy this book, but the instructor I had DIDN'T USE IT (school politics, I guess).
I didn't find it very helpful...not nearly enough examples.

The series started out great but its been stretched out 2 books too long ...

I'm halfway through and I don't know if I can bring myself to finish this one. The series started out great but its been stretched out 2 books too long already. The main character does little aside from pine over her boyfriend for pages at a time. Characters mention plot points then act completely surprised when the exact same point is brought up 5 pages later. *SPOILER ALERT* Throw in that half the characters killed off in previous installments are miraculously still alive, and I'm about done with this series.

This book was amazing until the last three chapters...then it just felt rushed. The ending was anticlimactic and did not make sense.
