The Phrasebook is fine but the CD is a big disappointment. First its phrases do not match the book at all. And the Italian is spoken too fast and too softly in many instances so I had to go back and play it again. Would recommend buying just the phrasebook.

Power has three faces

This is essential reading for those interested in the dynamics of power relations and, in particular, how power works to either enhance or undermine democratic participation in society. Over the course of the three essays that constitute the second edition of this book, Lukes develops an idea of power in three dimensions. In the first dimension, power is clearly visible in decision-making processes, where A exercises power over B when A's policy preferences, reflecting A's subjective interests, prevail over B's. Here, power is discernible only where a conflict of interests informs open debate over a public issue. This conflict gives rise to divergent policy preferences competing for public acceptance and political validation.

However, if one were to confine the study of power to its effects in the first dimension, that is, to the outcomes of decision-making processes, one misses other aspects of power detected in the biases of non-decision-making. Non-decision-making power is the power to keep certain issues off the table: it is the power to deny certain individuals or groups access to decision-making processes, and thus to prevent certain grievances from being translated into public issues. While decision-making power, as seen in the first dimension, may be widely distributed among various groups and individuals who alternately succeed in promoting their interests, there may be at the same time unity among these otherwise conflicting interests in preventing certain segments of the population from contributing to the discussion. The second dimension of power consists in this ability to control the agenda, to decide what gets decided--and what doesn't. Here, as in power's first dimension, power is again seen in a conflict situation, only the conflict is now covert, rendered invisible by non-decision-making power.

The third dimension of power incorporates and transcends power's first and second faces. Those who study three-dimensional power recognize not only power as it is exercised in the first and second dimensions but also power where it need not be so exercised. This occurs in the apparent absence of conflict, where power can be seen as the capacity to secure compliance to domination and thereby prevent conflicts or grievances from arising in the first place.

The third face of power is not directly visible, because the securing of willing compliance to domination does not require an explicit exercise of power. However, the mechanisms of such power (domination) are empirically accessible. They may involve the furthering of the material interests of the dominated within certain limits, as part of a class compromise, or they may involve the inculcation of ideologies that bring the dominated to accept the power structure of society as the "natural order of things" or as being divinely established. In both cases, which are not mutually exclusive, the "true interests" of the dominated are obscured; and the dominated are misled to act contrary to their real interests, chief among them being, one may argue, an interest in NOT being dominated and in having more freedom to live according to "the dictates of one's own nature and judgment."

Of course, as Lukes admits, "true interests" is a contested term. There doesn't seem to be a rigid set of objective interests with which everyone can readily identify. Rather than supplying a universal answer to the question of true interests, Lukes responds to this difficulty by providing a set of guidelines for identifying people's interests. The answer, Lukes argues, always depends on three things: the purpose of one's inquiry, one's theoretical framework, and the methods used.

Lukes also recognizes another difficulty in discussing the idea of true interests: It almost always leads to the notion of "false consciousness." False consciousness is a controversial idea, because it is often assumed to have condescending, elitist connotations. However, Lukes regards false consciousness as simply the result of being misled, many instances of which throughout history can be easily identified without much controversy. The mechanisms of false consciousness include censorship, disinformation, and "the promotion and sustenance of all kinds of failures of rationality and illusory thinking, among them the `naturalization' of what could be otherwise and the misrecognition of the sources of desire and belief" (p.149).

The third face of power, as developed by Lukes, expands the conceptual territory of power and reorients its study to include instances of power that escape the attention of those who conceive of power too narrowly, thereby limiting their observations to the realm of political participation. With this book, Lukes makes a vital contribution to the sociological study of power by revealing it as "capacity," and by showing how power works most effectively (and insidiously) when it is hidden.

An Amazon Best Book of April 2017: Much of the buzz touting Jessica Shattuck’s WWII novel, The Women in the Castle, likens it to Kristin Hannah’s wildly popular, The Nightingale. It’s an apt comparison—both feature brave women overcoming nearly unfathomable obstacles. But their association actually made me hesitant to pick it up. Surely the well of enthusiasm for Nazi-related dramas has to be running dry, and if it hasn’t, then an author really needs to “bring it.” Well, that well is still brimming as it turns out, and Ms. Shattuck certainly does. The women referred to in the title are widows of three conspirators involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler. Marianne von Lingenfels, whose moneyed pedigree has protected her from the more unsavory punishments of the war, has been tasked with locating the other resistance widows, and ensuring their safety. But she is no superhero. Along with the na�ve Benita and inscrutable Ania, they represent the everyday, ordinary Germans swept up in the extraordinary, who survived as best they could when the right thing to do wasn’t always clear (or even an option). If you’re curious about what it was like to be a typical citizen during this time--if you struggle to comprehend how a society could become a breeding ground for Hitler’s brand of evil, The Women in the Castle offers some insight. It also draws some chilling parallels to things brewing in the political climate today. Engrossing!

"The Women in the Castle" by Jessica Shattuck, is ​an engrossing novel ​about three German women after WWII​ and it includes ​all the usual Big Themes of right/wrong, guilt/innocence, revenge/forgiveness.​ ​

Marianne, Benita, and Ania, are the surviving wives of men who participated in the July 20, 1944, failed assassination attempt on Hitler (aka as Operation Valkyrie). Marianne, the strongest and the leader, promised to take care of the wives and children of the would-be assassins (all executed). In a rustic "castle" in northern Germany, the three very different women, with very different backgrounds and war-time experiences, band together to protect their children and each other in the chaotic days following the defeat of the Nazis.

I won't outline to plot except to say that the story is immediately interesting, and provides suspense and mystery as it unfolds over the course of several years. As a piece of historical fiction I learned some things I hadn't known. For example, just after the war and before the Cold War got into full-swing, there was a "Sprunkammer" or a "denazification council" that assigned Germans (including ex-Nazis) to groups based on their "guilt" and they were officially sanctioned accordingly. Shattuck's novel is well-researched and it spun me off on several illuminating Wikipedia trails.

One big question the novel asks is, can you love someone without knowing or caring what atrocities they may have committed in the past? Can one truly have a fresh start? Can it be deserved? Walking down the street in Germany after the war, what kinds of suspicions would one harbor? Did that man execute Jewish children? Did that woman rat out her neighbor? It's a fascinating time and place in history. I also HIGHLY recommend: "City of Women" by David Gillham, and "Skeletons at the Feast" by Chris Bohjalian.

Disappointing WWII Fiction

I really looked forward to reading this book so much that I bought it in hardcover as soon as it came out. Big mistake! The prewar story was very shallow and did not give enough depth of character with the spouses to care about their destinies. After the war the storyline was very linear and the characters quite unlikable. The storytelling itself was quite thready and lacks emotional depth. They actually spend very little time in the castle except for the five years after the war which they skip through pretty quickly. I also couldn't understand how Marianne and Benita could afford to live the lifestyle they do after the war. I'm sure the Nazis confiscated all of their capital. Found that part to be unbelievable but the rest of the story unlikable. Very disappointed!

Beautiful depiction of multiple perspectives on war and love and forgiveness

The characters were deeply developed, flawed, and very human. You learn to love and hate them in equal measure , you try to understand war time choices and share in the struggles of both the good guys and the bad. You feel closure with each character as you join them from youth to second and third generation children.

About the Author

Abby L. Ferber is Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies, and Director of the Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Kimberly Holcomb has her MA in Sociology with an interest in gender, sexuality, privilege, and intersectionality.

Tre Wentling is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at Syracuse University.

So glad I got this!

When I bought this book, I assumed that it was going to provide a great deal of information related to sex, gender and the role of oppression. What I did not expect was the detail and history provided by the contributing authors.

The first section provides the reader with multiple stories of how we came to view sex, gender and sexual orientation the way we do in our Western, US culture. As someone who has both taken and taught human sexuality, I was pleased to learn so many new things about the historical context of gender and sexual orientation, in particular about the relationship between science, the church and intersectional oppression.

As the book progresses, we are exposed to myriad dynamics, lenses and experiences of everything from the value of being transgender in certain Asian cultures to engaging in sexual activity as a person with disabilities (mental and physical). The ethics of who gets to make decisions about identity and behavior are also explored.

I highly recommend this book for individuals, educators and anyone who is interested in exploring the concepts of sex, gender and sexuality from a multi-dimensional perspective.

The quality of the book was nice. The content and articles in the textbook are amazing and informational. I needed it for a class at school, but not that the semester is over and I have graduated college, I am keeping the book, because it is a great read. Useful for social justice conversations or general learning on social justice issues.

An excellent introduction to practical confocal microscopy

This book provides a very "user-friendly" guide to beginners in the field of confocal microscopy. As introduction the author reviews in a compact and accesible manner basic issues of microscopy (including optics, the limits of microscopy, imaging modes and the parts of a microscope) and microscopy hardware always pointing out the advantages and drawbacks inherent to confocal microscopy. The main section of the book describes how to use a confocal microscope in detail, from collecting images to image presentation and publication, dealing along the way with topics such as interpretation of images, understanding fluorescence and fluorescent probes, specialized confocal microscopy techniques and live cell imaging. Appendices discuss further information that can be accessed through further reading or microscopy resources in the internet, as well as a succint evaluation of all commercial confocal microscopy brands currently available, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

The book has been written with a thorough care to produce an enjoyable and didactic text, containing many hints and "how to" procedures that have been personally very helpful to me when I started working with this technique, being completely novel to ANY class of microscopy.

The wealth of information available in its pages make it a good reference book on the subject. Indeed, we have adopted it in my laboratory as the standard for our confocal applications.

Very superficial

This book was recommended to me by the folks at the microscopy core in my university. I was hoping for an accessible technical primer on confocal microscopes with emphasis on the hardware and the underlying optical theory. Unfortunately, although there is an introduction to the hardware and a little bit of optics theory, these sections are very superficial and don't really add to your understanding of the technology (you'll be better off reading the the documentation on the manufacturer's websites, especially nikonU). The aim of this book seems to be to make sure you know what buttons to push when you are in front of the microscope, but not necessarily for you to understand what is that you are doing. The book is not bad. I would trade the section on software (that seems dated) for a good introduction to confocal optics and a more complete guide on how to make sure the hardware is optimally set up (key to get good images) which is also lacking.

Another winning entry

My wife and fifteen year old love John Flanagan's The Ranger's Apprentice series. We've been listening to the audiobooks for a few years now, always when we're on long trips so we can get a whole book in. This Thanksgiving we got away for a few days, and we listened to The Sorcerer of the North, the fifth book in the series of ten. Our trip was shorter than normal this time, though, but we ended up listening to the book during the quiet hours of our stay at a rental cabin.

In this book, young Will is a man hand has his own territory to cover as a Ranger. He's pretty much a law unto himself, a spy and a force for the king. It was odd seeing Will in action as a man instead of a teen, although he isn't a very old man, barely into his twenties. I missed seeing him a Halt's side, or trying to figure out how to play the odds against the adults. But it was also nice to see him pretty much full grown and doing what he was trained to do.

The plot is complicated in this book, and it took a little while for all the pieces to come together, but Flanagan is a gifted author when it comes to plots. Will is tasked with finding out what sickness has stricken down Lord Syron and who is truly loyal to him, and maybe sorting out who the eventual inheritor of the lands should be.

I liked the plotting and the characters, the hiding and the spycraft that goes on throughout. Alyss, Will's friend who is also a spy, joins the mission and things really heat up on all fronts because during the action Will and Alyss discover that they're drawn to each other in ways they hadn't expected.

Flanagan's sense of the world is awesome in this one. As Will traipses around the castle, the castlegrounds, and the forest outside the walls, the environment comes to life on every page. Flanagan has a vivid imagination and shares if quite elegantly with his readers.

I also enjoy the author's subtlety, the way he leads you down a path and you start expecting events to take a certain turn, then he twists everything around so that you don't know quite what is going on or who to trust. Flanagan is at his best in this one.

The only thing that will put some readers off, especially the new ones, is how the book ends with so many things left hanging. I howled when we got to the end, not prepared to let go. My son patiently reminded me that every book Flanagan does is more or less two parts. And that's true. Books five and six basically form one large story, as did the first pair of books and the second pair. However, the other two were not truncated quite so suddenly as events come to a halt in this one.

I've got the sixth book in the series. I'm just waiting on another family trip!

A real cliff hanger

I truly enjoyed this book, but it's a complete cliff hanger.

Will has grown up by several years and is now a full apprentice. He is on a special assignment, disguised as a jongleur (wandering entertainer) whose mission is to discover what is going on in the strategically important Norgate Fife. The King is ill and cannot be healed, and there are rumors that an ancient sorcerer has somehow come back to life and is living in the forest by the northernmost fortress of Norgate.

Will is mostly on his on in this book. Horace has only a minuscule role, and Halt and Crowley probably have fewer than five pages total devoted to them. Instead, in this fifth book, Will shares the stage with Courier Alyss, one of the orphans he grew up with. Will, however, is definitely the main star.

There's plenty of Ranger action, adventure, and intrigue, plus Tug and the presence of a new friend, a deeply loyal and intelligent dog who (so far) doesn't have a name.

The book ends with the mystery of the sorcerer solved, but everything else (the safety of the fife, the health of the king, a potential invasion of the northern neighbors, Alyss's safety, and what role Horace will play in the story) is primed for the next book. I'm grateful that I don't have to wait a year for it to be published! It's already on my bookshelf.

A word of warning: as the characters have grown up, so has the language. Damn is used numerous times throughout the book. I don't remember there being true cursing in any of the previous books of this series.

Will On His Own

After six years as an apprentice to the legendary Ranger Halt, Will has finally graduated. As a newly minted Ranger, he's sent to the relatively sleepy Fief of Seacliff. Not much happens in Seacliff, which means Will can get his feet underneath him and get used to relying on making decisions without Halt to guide him. As it turns out, Seacliff is not quite as boring as it first appeared. Before he is even properly settled, Will must deal with an angry and dangerous local man, as well as a wolfship full of raiding Skandians that comes ashore not far from Seacliff Castle. Successfully resolving these difficulties gives Will a much needed boost of confidence and it comes at the perfect time.

After a visit from his childhood friend, the diplomat Alyss Mainwaring, Will is headed off on a secret mission to the icy Fief of Norgate, charged with investigating the mysterious illness of Castle Macindaw's Lord Syron. Though small, Macindaw occupies an important defensive position for the Kingdom of Araluen, protecting a significant pass through the northern mountains from the Scotti tribes to the north. With rumors of sorcery surrounding Lord Syron's illness, King Duncan needs someone he can trust on the scene to determine exactly what is happening. It's up to Alyss and Will to uncover the truth and perhaps save Araluen from invasion.

Although The Sorcerer of the North is officially book five in The Ranger's Apprentice series, chronologically it follows Erak's Ransom (book seven), which fills in some of the three years that pass between books four and five. Like all the books of The Ranger's Apprentice, The Sorcerer of the North is exquisitely crafted, filled with the kind of description and detail that draws the reader directly into the story. Of all the books in The Ranger's Apprentice series though, this one provides the least amount of battle action. This does not mean it suffers from a lack of suspense. This is more a novel of espionage, although I expect to find some of Mr. Flanagan's trademark battle scenes in the second part of this story, The Siege of Macindaw.
