About the Author

Jonathan Sammartino earned his B.A. in Psychology and Digital Art and Photography at Georgetown University, and his Ph.D. in Psychology at University of California at Berkeley. At the college and high school levels he teaches psychology, digital photography, logic, and programming.
Gideon Rappaport earned his B.A. in English Literature and Art History at Cowell College, University of California at Santa Cruz, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in English and American Literature at Brandeis University. At high school, college, and graduate levels, he has taught Shakespeare, English literature and composition, and Humanities. He is the editor of Dusk and Dawn: Poems and Prose of Philip Thompson�(One Mind Good Press, 2005).
Dr. Sammartino and Dr. Rappaport team teach an introduction to grammar, logic, and rhetoric, for which this book is the text.

There is nothing in this book you can't get from a quick Google Search. The first 200 pages are a very cursory listing of elements of each leg of the Trivium: Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric. For example, the Grammar section lists the eight parts of speech with each of their subtypes and a few examples. While this is certainly a handy reference, two minutes on Google should yield some equally handy, if not better outlines. Also, there is a significant dearth of commentary or explanation overall in this book. After 200 pages of outlines and brief definitions of a number of element lists, e.g. fallacies of logic, rhetorical devices, etc., the remaining two-thirds of the book are filled with open source speeches and writings throughout history. The presumption, I suppose, is that these are presumed to be shining examples of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, but minimal commentary is provided and no connections are made to the previous material presented. In total, you are better off reading the Wikipedia page on grammar, logic, and rhetoric, and exploring for yourself the various sub elements of each.

Rose Rock rocked it out of the park!

This book was one of the most amazing (fictional) books I've read in years. I'm not a big fan of fiction, but this not only held me captive, but it made me think on things from a different perspective.
Bravo to Faith Living for producing something of worth in today's world...I definitely want to take a (long) trip to Rose Rock!!!
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a serious adventure, but...be prepared to be changed once you do! ;)

So far, so good...

I'm an avid reader and have ordered dozens of books through Amazon, but this is the first one I've taken the time to write a review for, because I believe this book can help others in the same situation I was.

I ordered this book when I was applying for Life Insurance, based on the investment strategy in Douglas Andrew's book, "Missed Fortune 101". I wanted to review another reference on life insurance to learn more about it, and to corroborate Andrews' strategy. This is the only other book I could find that discussed LI from a financial investment perspective. This is a very comprehensive book about LI. It's a large book, and so far I've only read portions, skipping around to the areas I needed to understand the type of policy I was applying for, and to justify in my mind that indeed it was the right one for me (I'm working with a financial planner who recommended a particular plan, and has largely focused his practice on Doug Andrews' strategy). This book gave me a lot of the information I needed to ask my agent questions about my policy. In fact, he was impressed with my questions and wanted the name of this book.

This is a very easy to read book, with plenty of *understandable* tables as examples. I have also found it to be very objective, discussing the tradeoffs of the different types of policies, and discussing in what personal situations a particular policy might be best. The intent of this book is clearly educational - there's no hidden agenda or bias that I can detect. The author has CFP, CLU, and CHFC credentials.

Finally, and very importantly, this author stresses the need to manage your life insurance policy over time, as you would any other investment - especially the flexible aspects of policies, and including, where necessary, 1035 transfers to a more appropriate policy.

This book is a must read, for anyone attempting to accumulate significant amounts of wealth and ample case reserves for a secure retirement. Once you grasp the full understanding of how best to pay for Life Insurance, the hardest part may be finding a qualified Financial Advisor to assist you over the long run. This is a long term arrangement, one that requires a long term Advisor, to assist you in doing what most people are not capable of doing....accumulating wealth. The book will also be a guide to refer back to, from time to time.

Great way to learn about insurance

The author did a geat job in explaining life insurance products. Those that have panned the book have a built in bias against insurance companies and their salesmen/woman. Fine, but I am waiting for one to write a cogent critique of why the author is wrong in his analysis. Frankly, I haven't found one financial services professional that can, even those that don't sale insurance products. Bottom line, the strategy makes sense for a many if not most folks who are trying to accumulate retirement $$. And yes the insurance industry makes good fees selling their products just like the securities companies make great fees with their products whether they are indexed mutual funds or stocks and bonds. I simply consider this the cost of doing business and move on. So what if someone makes some money helping you have a more comfortable retirement. Read it, take the ideas seriously, and incorporate the ideas into your plan. I have.

Good Book

I heard you on George Noory the other night. For some reason your manner and what you said appealed to me.

I just got your book. I thought it would be just some entertaining fiction. (I thought it would be maybe 40 pages long. I surely didn't think 555.) But I can see from looking through it just a little bit that it is really something good.

I have a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago in continuum mechanics. I can already see that you put a lot of science into it. The combination of science with religion is very compelling.

One question that occurred to me when I heard you talk, was why the oceans wouldn't drain into the hole at the North Pole. I'm sure you have an answer in the book. (Maybe the ice goes down into the hole, effectively forming a wall. But then if global warming melts the ice, I would speculate that the ocean would flow into the hole.)

I hope that in the future you can publish your work as a regular book. I think you would sell a lot of copies. I would buy one for myself, and others to give as gifts. I think you have a great combination with the subject - along with the old stories, text, calculations, pictures, graphics and photographs.

A terrible printing of a book

It's a good story I'm sure but look up from the cover to page 1 and you will see how the whole book is laid out. Starting of sentences and ending before you got to the end. Start a paragraph and the ending might be two or three pages later. I have never seen a book laid out like this without being checked before printing. I would like to get my money back on this one. I like stories about the hollow earth but this one stunk to high heaven but just on the printing of the book. Some parts you could read, others you couldn't.

I have to say, this is a remarkable collection of material. I have always considered this topic "hogwash" until going through Mr. Cluff's material. He has compiled a remarkable amount of information that must be seriously considered by anyone with any breadth of context of world history and science. Having studied ancient cultures and languages as well as advanced cutting edge quantum theory (and beyond, yes, there is some unbelievable work going on right now that I have to believe will re-frame much of what we currently accept about the electrodynamic nature of the universe), I have to give kudos to the author for his due diligence. There is some remarkable information in this compendium. I am not one who believes much in coincidence and there are far too many coincidental connections to be made that I can now see through this seeming revelatory work.

The series avoids the usual pitfall of so many beginners' books pretty pictures accompanied by brief, mediocre text. Instead, its carefully graded exercises are thoughtfully illustrated and packed with cogent advice for the novice. Buchan and Baker's book on still life, for example, contains a wonderful historical survey with examples ranging from Caravaggio, Manet, and van Gogh to Picasso and Warhol. Demonstrations utilize ink, pencil, watercolor, acrylics, and oils in various styles. One can experiment with realistic, abstract, and surreal treatments of a basket of fruit, an old telephone, or a collection of bottles. The quality of this series is consistent, and Hamlyn is, wisely, also reprinting earlier fine entries like Patricia Monahan's Step-by-Step Art School: Watercolour. Excellent for beginners.

It's almost impossible to pick an art book based on others opinions but I personally fell in love with this book. I'm new to figure drawing and this book is just what I need. Not only does it give step-by-step instructions for several classic poses in a variety of mediums but it also provides you with the reference photo (which few figure drawing how-to's seem to do). There aren't a lot of exercises but for the price I'm still happy. A far more comprehensive book you should definitely check out is "The Big Book Of Drawing And Painting The Figure" - it's awesome and a great bargain at amazon!

A good book that covers a lot of material

This is an excellent beginners book on the subject of depicting nudes in several different media. There are many excellent and highly detailed books available about figure drawing, but relatively few for acrylic, oil, or water color. This one covers many media - pencils, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, oil, acrylic and more. The examples are well illustrated, attractive, clearly explained, and simple enough for beginners to follow. The book is colorful and the subjects both varied and attractive. With as many media as are covered in this book, the authors could not go into the depth of a book focused on a single medium. Instead, they contented themselves with providing thorough explanations of the approaches that seem to work best for them. I was pleased to see some good simple recipes for mixing a suitable range of flesh tones (some authors are rather vague about specific color mixes). There are also good explanations of undercoating, modeling through tone and color, glazing techniques, etc. Basic techniques are explained and illustrated well, and the simple demos are executed well enough to inspire an inspiring artist to learn more and to do even better. For those with interest in continuing on with figure art, there are many more detailed books available. Some of the best are by Robert Barrett Life Drawing: How To Portray The Figure With Accuracy And Expression, Anthony Ryder The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing: A Contemporary Perspective on the Classical Tradition, Giovanni Civardi Drawing The Female Nude, Joseph SheppardHow to Paint Like the Old Masters, Laurel Hart Putting People in Your Paintings, Don AndrewsInterpreting the Figure in Watercolor, Boris Vallejo and Julie BellFantasy Workshop: A Practical Guide Fantasy Art Techniques. I have no hesitation recommending this book, because it covers a lot of ground, easily and clearly. I wish I'd found it sooner, but I've picked up a few new ideas too.

I am Reaping the Benefits and making Grown Up Coloring Time a regular part of my weekly routine!

I babysit for friend's children and am a big supporter of quiet coloring time to help with their manual dexterity, as well as stimulate their imaginations while teaching them their colors, but I personally have not colored in a coloring book for years.
As an adult, it seems I am always too busy to sit down and allow my inner child to have some Healthy coloring book fun.
That is Until I ordered this Grown Up Coloring Book by Love Live Color!
What a Fun, Relaxing way to set aside my busyness and allow myself to get in touch with my Quiet, Creative side, which has been sorely neglected for too long a time.
This 8 1/2" x 8 1/4" Soft Cover, Grown Up Coloring Book Volume 1 offers a Really Nice Variety of 48 Different Mandalas which are approximately between 6" and 7" in Diameter.
I like that Love, Live, Color has included both Extremely Intricate and Mildly Complex designs, so I can choose according to my level of concentration.
I also appreciate that the Lines in the designs are Clearly Defined, so I do not need a magnifying glass to see where to put the tip of my colored pencils.
The Back Side of Each coloring page offers a Lined Journal Page, where I can jot down any thoughts or feelings that rise to the surface during my coloring sessions.
Initially I questioned the need for them, but I am quickly learning that when I allow myself to slow down and concentrate on coloring these Mandalas, my heart opens up and I find myself with a desire to express myself in writing, so I am glad that these Journal Pages are included.
I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to purchase this Grown Up Coloring Book at a reduced cost in exchange for testing and review. I will definitely be taking advantage of the Download for the 10 free Printable Mandalas offered in the back of this book and when those are colored, I will be seeking out Volume 2.
