Early in a sixteen-year sojourn in Mexico as an engineer for an American mining company, John W. F. Dulles became fascinated by the story of Mexico’s emergence as a modern nation, and was imbued with the urge to tell that story as it had not yet been told—by letting events speak for themselves, without any interpretations or appraisal.

The resultant book offers an interesting paradox: it is “chronicle” in the medieval sense—a straightforward record of events in chronological order, recounted with no effort at evaluation or interpretation; yet in one aspect it is a highly personal narrative, since much of its significant new material came to Dulles as a result of personal interviews with principals of the Revolution. From them he obtained firsthand versions of events and other reminiscences, and he has distilled these accounts into a work of history characterized by thorough research and objective narration.

These fascinating interviews were no more important, however, than were the author’s many hours of laborious search in libraries for accounts of the events from Carranza’s last year to Calles’ final retirement from the Mexican scene. The author read scores of impassioned versions of what transpired during these fateful years, accounts written from every point of view, virtually all of them unpublished in English and many of them documents which had never been published in any language.

Combining this material with the personal reminiscences, Dulles has provided a narrative rich in its new detail, dispassionate in its presentation of facts, dramatic in its description of the clash of armies and the turbulence of rough-and-tumble politics, and absorbing in its panoramic view of a people’s struggle.

In it come to life the colorful men of the Revolution —Obreg�n, De la Huerta, Carranza, Villa, Pani, Carillo Puerto, Morones, Calles, Portes Gil, Vasconcelos, Ortiz Rubio, Garrido Canabal, Rodr�guez, C�rdenas. (Dulles’ narrative of their public actions is illumined occasionally by humorous anecdotes and by intimate glimpses.) From it emerges also, as the main character, Mexico herself, struggling for self-discipline, for economic stability, for justice among her citizens, for international recognition, for democracy.

This account will be prized for its encyclopedic collection of facts and for its important clarification of many notable events, among them the assassination of Carranza, the De La Huerta revolt, the assassination of Obreg�n, the trial of Toral, the resignation of President Ortiz Rubio, and the break between C�rdenas and Calles. More than sixty photographs supplement the text.

Alright if you want a quick tutorial before actually learning

Other reviews are correct. This book is poorly edited. References are made that are never actually introduced, "punctuation" of code is written incorrectly, and a few things have the "how" explained but not the "why".

However, my purpose for purchasing this book was to learn the basics of Matlab (I am a phd student and have NEVER used it before), before I started a class on using Matlab in my field. For that purpose it has been a fine guide. I would NOT suggest this book if you are trying to totally teach yourself Matlab, but if you just want background before either using another book or taking a course, this book is fine. (As long as you can recognize when things are just typos.)

A quick beginners guide

If you have no prior knowledge of Matlab then this is probably as good as place to start as any. It is a shortish book which you can work through relatively quickly to give you all the basic skills. For more intermediate or advanced uses of Matlab then this book is not going to be any use, but then you wouldn't expect that given its title. The book uses a series of examples to show you basic features of Matlab, which help you learn quickly the commands and more particularly begin to understand the syntax that are so critical to Matlab and other mathematical software.

If you thought this was just another book about crystals, think again! Not only is the author an experienced magical practitioner in her own right, but her magical tutor also held a doctorate in geology – and it shows. Not just in the obvious love of the subject but in the vast store of magical information crammed into these 186 pages. Of course there is the usual list of gemstones with their correspondences but Magic Crystals, Sacred Stones goes much further in explaining that it can be the very rocks beneath our feet that generates magical energy – and how it can affect our own magical working. Did you know, for example, that many of the stones used in our ancient monuments contain a high percentage of quartz; and that quartz is the most magically potent crystal on the planet? Another interesting aspect to this book is that the exercises at the end of each chapter are designed for the purpose of creating your own personal system of divination by crystallomancy, the ancient practice of casting lots using small stones or crystals. As well as being a practical magical guide, it is a worthy successor to those two classic historical reference works The Curious Lore of Precious Stones (Kunz) and Magical Jewels (Evans).

Earth energies in your hand

This is a really interesting book, bringing far more weight to the subject of crystals than is normal for New Age fayre. There’s a hefty reference section with more technical information than esoteric, and as a Druid, this really appeals to me. I’m wary of dogmatic spiritual interpretations of things, but going in depth on the tangible aspects we might easily agree on, and then using that as a basis for personal exploration seems like a much better idea to me. I was also very taken with the emphasis Melusine Draco places on relating to the rocks beneath your feet. Knowing what you are stood on, where that comes from and what it means is a way of connecting with the earth, and the massive time scales of geology are a useful counter-perspective for human issues. If you are working with earth energies or crystals, or want to work with personally sourced stones, there’s a lot to be gained from reading this book.

The author, an heir to a Traditional Witchcraft Coven dating to the mid-nineteenth century, would be at home in a Circle or a university lecture hall. This book is as much an exposition of the mysteries of Witchcraft, and the witch’s treasures in the earth, as it is a guide to geology. If you’re looking for a crystals-of-Atlantis or some other kind of New Age nonsense fluff, this is not the book for you. If you want solid, tried and tested knowledge that will aid your practice, make you think, and challenge you to do the spade-and-shovel work of real Witchcraft, this is what you’ve been looking for. Carl Sagan called geology the “study of time and pressure.” Melusine Draco has expanded that science to include Witchcraft in a way that is elegant and disciplined. This book is a “must have” for any student of the Nameless Art.

A Gift to Education

Vajra Watson's book, Learning to Liberate: Community-Based Solutions to the Crisis in Urban Education, is a wonderful book to read for those involved in education. She provides four different perspectives of individuals that work within the community and their incredible, tireless dedication to improving the lives of the youth they work with. It gives great perspectives on how to not only connect with students that many educators struggle with, but to also engage them. It can be a challenge to work with and be able to teach students that come from so many diverse backgrounds that are different from your own. However, it shows that while you may not have all of the answers, there are those in the community you can reach out to that can provide the much needed support. It is very inspiring as to how much passion these individuals have for putting youth on the right track. They are able to set the bar very high. Dr. Watson captures their passion and illustrates their methodology very well throughout the book. Her time spent preparing this book shows just how committed she is to improving the lives of others. Not only will the featured communities benefit from their efforts, but the field of education and society as a whole can certainly learn from the advice given. Too many times educators lose hope, but we must not be so quick to judge the leaders of tomorrow as they can prove much more than we could have ever imagined.

A Beacon of Hope

Learning to Liberate was a required text in my critical pedagogy course this summer. I am extremely grateful that my professor chose to present us with this book!!! Some people may wonder, "What is the crisis in public education?" "How do I relate to the youth of today?" The answers to these questions can be found in Vajra Watson's Learning to Liberate. We hear constantly in the news, at conferences, and seminars that there is a problem in public education. A lot of finger pointing and blame shifting has occurred without positive results. While policies and government standards are created as a one-size fits all solution, they fail to address the individual life circumstances that many of our youth experience daily. On the contrary, Learning to Liberate is all about ACTION and acknowledges people that are "in the trenches" creating change in our communities. Watson's use of ethnographic portraiture takes the reader on a personal journey from one grassroots community organization to the next and she provides a detailed, heartfelt account of her interactions with four youth workers in California. Watson does an incredible job using words to create vivid imagery of her encounters and, as a result, I became emotionally invested in each chapter. This book reads like a novel and you get a real sense of Watson's desire to help misguided youth. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in education or looking to gain a deeper understanding about the environments that influence many of our youth. This book is a great investment for those who aim to liberate and empower youth from all walks of life!

I was Liberated

Leaning to Liberate was a great book. It was easy to read and I stayed engaged throughout each story. She allowed the reader to feel the passion, pain and triumph of each of the community leader and their students. Although they all practiced a different pedagogy, they all knew how to reach their students. They met them right where they were and figured how how to impact them when no one else could.

As a new teacher, I am learning that what and how I learned, was totally wrong. I learned that if I teach that way, I will be doing my students a disservice and I won't help them to get on the "freedom train."

Watson showed how poverty can easily start children down a path to destruction and there has to be someone willing to pull them out. She also pointed out how the schools are contributing to this crisis, but how teachers can help improve it.

While reading this book I went through an array of emotions. There were times I was sad, frustrated, angry, but when I finished, I was motivated. All of the leaders realized they could not reach all the children out there that needed their help, but they knew that there were kids out there they could help. That is the message that will ring loud throughout my teaching career. I will not be able to reach all my students, but I will stay motivated to reach as many as I can.

So, this book is just another lead-generation platform for which readers ought to pay!

I gave two stars because there is a some interesting info (actually outline) on businesses I wasn't aware of.

If you are looking for inspiration and information, there are many in-depth case studies out there. If you are looking for techniques, you'll not find it in this book. You need to buy the author's course for that.

All you need to know about marketing

If you buy one marketing book, Meaningful should be it. I have been an avid reader of Bernadette's blog for sometime now (it's actually the only marketing blog I read) because she has a powerful way of cutting through all the jargon and getting to the heart of what marketing really is. She continually reminds me that successful marketing isn't so much about what I want to accomplish, but about what my audience wants to accomplish. It's not so much about telling people to like my message as it is about creating something that helps my audience reach their goals.

Meaningful is a wonderful summary of Ms. Jiwa's marketing wisdom. It is concise and engaging, and I found myself wanting to highlight almost every sentence. Do yourself, and your business, a favor and buy this book.

Ideal for an entrepreneur toying with ideas and for one who is wondering why things aren't working.

Entrepreneurs, if you are at the start of your idea, at the very heart of the seed - then this is your starting point.
The compass which you need to return to, as your business evolves, as customers get tired (because trust me, they will) and as competitors strike in.

So many companies and stories to feel inspired by and to learn from. This book will have you googling up Apps you've never heard of and ordering from brands that will solve the problems you thought were life's realities.
