Inspired by egalitarian doctrines, the Dalit communities in India have been fighting for basic human and civic rights since the middle of the nineteenth century. In this book, Shailaja Paik focuses on the struggle of Dalit women in one arena - the realm of formal education – and examines a range of interconnected social, cultural and political questions. What did education mean to women? How did changes in women’s education affect their views of themselves and their domestic work, public employment, marriage, sexuality, and childbearing and rearing? What does the dissonance between the rhetoric and practice of secular education tell us about the deeper historical entanglement with modernity as experienced by Dalit communities?

Dalit Women's Education in Modern India is a social and cultural history that challenges the triumphant narrative of modern secular education to analyse the constellation of social, economic, political and historical circumstances that both opened and closed opportunities to many Dalits. By focusing on marginalised Dalit women in modern Maharashtra, who have rarely been at the centre of systematic historical enquiry, Paik breathes life into their ideas, expectations, potentials, fears and frustrations. Addressing two major blind spots in the historiography of India and of the women’s movement, she historicises Dalit women’s experiences and constructs them as historical agents. The book combines archival research with historical fieldwork, and centres on themes including slum life, urban middle classes, social and sexual labour, and family, marriage and children to provide a penetrating portrait of the actions and lives of Dalit women.

About the Author
William E. Ryan is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. Before moving to academia, he held positions in industry for five years. He has published over 100 technical papers and his research interests include coding and signal processing with applications to data storage and data communications.

Shu Lin is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Davis. He has authored and co-authored numerous technical papers and several books, including the successful Error Control Coding (with Daniel J. Costello). He is an IEEE Life Fellow and has received several awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize for U.S. Senior Scientists (1996) and the IEEE Third-Millenium Medal (2000).

This book is very well written by two of the leading coding experts in the world. The emphasis is on modern iteratively decoded codes and heavily weighted toward LDPC codes. The LDPC codes have borrowed heavily from classical codes and have transformed themselves into LDPC code classes. The book is for the advanced graduate researcher and the practicing coding engineer. The book is not a coding cookbook, the state of iterative coding today is still in its adolescent stage. There are still interesting problems to solve and they are alluded to in the book and the advanced topics chapter. This is must reading for the coding researcher and those working on next generation communications at the physical layer.

Excellent coverage of modern codes, not a replacement for classic texts

This book does a great job of explaining modern channel channel codes. LDPC codes are given exceptionally thorough treatment, but the various types of turbocodes are also covered well. This book's explanation of EXIT charts is better than any other coding textbook that I've read.

This textbook is not a replacement for the classics like Lin and Costello. Its treatment of block and convolutional codes is enough to introduce the modern codes, but not especially thorough or rigorous. This book can be a great companion to Lin and Costello, which provides a much stronger mathematical background to coding theory and goes into classical channel codes in greater detail.

This book shows some details in LDPC codes and EXIT charts that you would not found in other literature. Another aspect that conduct me to buy this book was the Authors (William Ryan and Shu Lin) who are a reference in terms of channel coding and theoretical analysis. The book is organized in such way that you can improve your knowledge step by step. The details how to build modern LDPC codes are very didactic and self learning. If you have the chance to buy it do not hesitate. I strongly recommend this book. He is mortified when she buys him adult, disposable diapers to help him to protect the mattress in the guest bedroom. Yet the diapers are just the beginning of Mike's slow regression living under her roof.

As much as he resents Jen's firm hand and condescending attitude, Mike slowly begins to develop a crush on the kind and gorgeous brunette whom he lives with. With each passing day, he draws closer to her and becomes a little less resistant. During his summer with Jen, Mike stands to lose all hope of living as a grown up... but in return, he'll find a security and peace of mind he never imagined possible.

Another Great Installment Praising Female Dominance

E.L. Haley does it again with this follow up from his previous ABDL Anthology. This is well well written and aimed at those who desire and crave dominant women, humiliation, diaper play and embarrassment in their lives. Most of the literature on this topic at Amazon is devoted to female littles or subs. EL.Haley creates a scene where the male loses his status in a relationship and females gain the upper hand. I'm waiting with bated breath for his next installment.

The best I've seen

This cruising guide served us well throughout four months of Caribbean cruising. In thumbing through other books, I have yet to find any pilot book as thorough and useful. It is also good value for the money as it covers all the Leeward and Windward islands, using good detail despite the broad scope. We always found the information accurate and dependable. Detail charts of ports are very good (for example, all the wrecks at St Pierre are indicated) and it seems to have done a good job of keeping up with new developments in the islands (such as the new marinas being developed in Grenada and elsewhere). The information is well organized so that you can quickly find the pilot notes and easily distinguish them from other information such as the useful tips on things ashore. I can highly recommend this book!
