About the Author
John C. Cavanaugh is President and CEO of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. Cavanaugh is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, and the Gerontological Society of America, and has served as president of the Adult Development and Aging Division (Division 20) of the APA. Cavanaugh has also written (with the late Fredda Blanchard-Fields) ADULT DEVELOPMENT AND AGING. His research interests in gerontology concern family caregiving as well as the role of beliefs in older adults' cognitive performance.

Fredda Blanchard-Fields, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology and Chair of the department at Georgia Institute of Technology. Her current research interests include social cognition in adulthood and aging as well as everyday problem solving and emotion regulation from adolescence through older adulthood. She has been published in Psychology and Aging, Developmental Psychology, Current Directions in Psychological Science, and other journals. She is a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Gerontological Society of America and a member of the American Psychological Society, the Society for Research and Child Development, and the Psychonomics Society.

Great set up. Interesting and relevant content.

Of all the textbooks I purchased for my undergraduate degree, this is one of few that I actually read, almost in its entirety. I learned so much about aging from this book and my eyes were opened to many things I should take more seriously about my health and working with the elderly. I enjoyed the set up of each chapter--each chapter begins with real life examples of people related to the issues/concepts of the chapter.

It was required, but it was also very useful. I still sometimes wish that I had not sold it back at the end of the semester.

About the Author
Eldor A. Paul is a Senior Research Scientist at the Natural Resources Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University, Fort Collins and Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University, East Lansing. During his time at Michigan State, he was professor of Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry, and Crop and Soil Sciences. He earned degrees from the University of Alberta and the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on the dynamics of soil organic matter and the microbial ecology of soil. Dr. Paul is a Fellow of ASA, SSSA, the Canadian Society of Soil Science, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Classic of Environmental History

Over the past two decades, Richard White has been one of the truly outstanding historians of the American West, Native America, and the environment. This, his first book, is not nearly as sweeping in scope as his later works, but is a masterful look at the environmental history of a small county in Western Washington that will interest any student of American history. White examines the interaction of humans and the environment in Island County, Washington, to demonstrate how humans have continuously shaped the land over thousands of years, and how these changes have been both conscious and accidental. The opening chapters concern Indian land use in the county, and conclude that native people largely determined the region's landscape by encouraging certain crops through burning of prairies and forests. While this insight is fairly obvious to most environmental historians now, it is a direct contradiction of the European opinion that Indians did not alter the land. White settlers also altered the landscape of Island County by introducing market agriculture and logging. These activities had drastic consequences, some intentional, such as the introduction of European crops, and some unintentional, like massive soil erosion and the accidental spread of the Canadian thistle, a weed that temporarily threatened farmers in the nineteenth century. The final chapters of the book concern twentieth century attempts to encourage settlement of Appalachian farmers on logged-off land (a fascinating New Deal effort that was a complete failure), and the attempt to change the island landscape for the benefit of tourists. This is a fascinating transformation that continues to this day. Overall, this is a very well-written classic of environmental history. The in-depth descriptions of ecological principles may scare off a novice reader, but the history embedded in the ecology is fascinating, and well worth the effort.

A great introduction to human influences on the land and vice versa

White takes a refreshingly sympathetic approach to talking about human influences on the land. He talks about both American Indians and white settlers that makes them seem real and relevant to today and gives them credit for being real, thinking people. A welcome change from many books.

it matters how we use the land

A couple decades ago a new style of research-and-resulting-book appeared. It told the story of land use from the point of view of a historian, including the mutual effect of geography and social organization. This book is one of them (another is Changes in the Land, Revised Edition: Indians, Colonists, and the Ecology of New England by William Cronon). Unfortunately nobody picked up the trend and it died out after an excellent start.

Revisiting these old gems is highly worthwhile. They shed light on the intersection of ecology and human populations. By following the same place for decades or even centuries, they show which kinds of human uses fit well into the given geography and which didn't.

Who knew that by studying Island County in detail you could find out that:
(1) Sustainable Indian population levels were actually *higher* than sustainable non-Indian population levels until quite recently.
(2) A political and social "back to the land" movement lasted several decades (even though there was very little evidence behind it), and caused a huge amount of human sorrow.
(3) Applying "standard" human use patterns to every different geography resulted in not just very disappointing returns but also permanent ecological damage.
(4) Seemingly very minor actions for just a few years (for example overgrazing) resulted in ecological changes that last so long they are essentially permanent.
(5) City-folks attitudes dramatically affected on country-folks ways of life.
(6) Agricultural over-population made life extremely difficult for the recent arrivals.

British terminology

My 9 yr old likes it "ok". It got 3 stars because she's still reading so it must be good enough for that, but 3 because it has waaaaaay too many British words. I'm constantly having to look up words because she doesn't know what it means and I don't either! I don't know if they are slang or what (as I've never been there) but I'm pretty sure the book could have been written without so many of them

Really fun read! I love that Phoebe wants to become closer to her sister and I love the fact that she traipses all over London to do it. I enjoyed reading about the past sisters and how Phoebe discovered clues to the spell. I enjoyed the tie in with Nora. I really liked the moments between Alice and Phoebe - both the fighting and the good times. Of course it made me want to travel to London.

When Pheobe finds a letter saying a spell that can bring 2 people together Pheobe is set to finish the spell and bring her sister and her back together.But she has to not tell anyone and try and finish the spell without her parents or her sister findoing out.If it means adventure then Phoebe's in.It's another one of liza shroeder's awsome books

Good books for learning German, but all listed together. Make sure to use ISBN to choose!

Please, note that Amazon groups all the books in the series together and lists them as "different editions". If you need any, I would recommend using the ISBNs to look for them (they are listed at the editors online shop: http://www.cornelsen.de/erw/reihe/r-4530/ra-8115/titel/back_link/search) and add them to the cart. I bought several items from the series (Kursbuch, Vokabeltaschenbuch, Testheft, DVD and CDs) and had no trouble using the ISBNs to get the correct item.

Just note a few things about the items in this series:
- The Kursbuch does come with a CD but only with the exercises from the "Ubung" part (exercises to work on what was learned) and the Modelltest. If you want to work on the book completely on your own (or want to go over it again), you may need to buy the CDs to get all the audios (lessons, exercises and model test).
- The Sprachtrainingbuch (workbook) comes with a CD and this one does include all the audios of the workbook.
- Note that there are two versions of the Kursbuch: one with the whole book and 12 lessons (A2 Gesamtband) , the other with the book divided in two parts (A2 Teilband 1 and A2 Teilband 2), each with 6 lessons. Be sure to check what you need and the ISBN for that.

potential buyers want to read this:

It is a good book, but I felt very frustrated when I realised that I needed to buy an audio CD which was not included. When you read "book and CD", you imagine you have it all. What you have is a good book, some videos on the CD, but you are missing all the exercises where you should be listening to conversations and answering questions. It may have been a bit more expensive to buy, but I would have preferred to have the lot in one go.
Apart from that, I recommend the book if you have a good teacher to guide you through.

This is the second book I have read this year by pastor and author Michael John Beasley. Published in 2008, this book titled "Indeed, Has Paul Really Said?" is a critique of NT Wright's teaching on the doctrine of justification. For those of you who may not be familiar with NT Wright, he has served as the Bishop of Durham for the Church of England since 2003, has authored quite a number of books and has gained popularity for advancing the theological movement known today as "The New Perspective on Paul." Pastor Beasley has written this book as a modern-day defense of the crucial doctrine of justification, specifically focusing his critical attention on the content in Wright's book titled "What Saint Paul Really Said," (1997) and initially on Wright's reinterpretation of the biblical term and phrase "righteous" and "the righteousness of God," respectively.

Considering the possibility that some readers may be unfamiliar with Wright's beliefs on the doctrine of justification, Beasley provided a quick sample from Wright's book, "What Saint Paul Really Said," to give the reader a glimpse of the unusual and off-centered nature of his teaching:

"Many Christians, both in the Reformation and in the counter-Reformation traditions, have done themselves and the church a great disservice by treating the doctrine of `justification' as central to their debates, and by supposing that it described the system by which people attained salvation."

Beasley divides his critique of NT Wright's teaching into four parts:

1. A Lexical Analysis. Beasley contends Wright's use of the phrase "the righteousness of God" and "justification" both fail to pass the test of a careful study of the word "righteousness" in the original languages, both OT and NT, from a background and semantic sense.

2. The Forensic (Judicial) Context: Tests Wright's understanding of God's judicial application as it relates to justification of the sinner.

3. Paul's Apostleship: Tests Wright's assertions concerning Paul's pedigree as a Pharisee and what, if any, impact it had on his NT writings.

4. The Whole Counsel of God: Tests Wright's writings on the doctrine of justification against the whole of revealed scripture.

With a solid game plan in hand, Beasley painstakingly applies each of his four tests to Wright's contention that the phrase "the righteousness of God" and His justification of the sinner has been misinterpreted and is therefore misunderstood by much of Christendom today. He insists that in it's essential understanding "...the righteousness of God would have one obvious meaning: God's own faithfulness to his promises, to the covenant." Whereas Wright extensively uses extra-biblical sources and traditions to prop up his retooling of Paul's message, Beasley spends four chapters carefully applying his 4-point argument, pointing out exactly where Wright has erred, where he has deviated from the truth and at the same time constructing a compelling biblical case. After placing Paul's biblical message side-by-side with Wright's less than biblical evidence, Beasley makes it clear to the reader exactly what the Apostle Paul "really said," especially when compared to Wright's extra-biblical and ecumenically-driven version.

This is a detailed, theological book, yet is still not out of reach of the interested reader. I'm convinced it would be a disservice to the author and the reader if I perused every nuance of Beasley's position, describing in any detail the arguments spelled out this book. Each reader must do that for themselves. But I can say this, Beasley's 149-page book is loaded with easy to follow biblical exegesis, footnotes on the page referenced (my favorite kind of citing), and an outstanding 5-part Appendix that will engage and satisfy the student of this essential doctrine of the Christian faith.

One aspect of Beasley's book that I found exceptional was the fact that prior to publication he actually provided Wright, an Anglican theologian, with a transcript of the book, requesting Wright share his observations and a critique of "Indeed, has Paul Really Said?" I would think one would have to be pretty confident of the accuracy of your research and the strength of argument to do that. Even more surprising, NT Wright did actually respond back with a brief response. As it turned out, the addition of Wright's critique only strengthened and enhanced Beasley's book all the more. I enjoyed this book immensely, especially Pastor Beasley's meticulous approach to pealing back the veneer covering Wright's "New" view of Paul, examining its nuances, and then with resolute commitment to the truth provided his own analysis. No "straw-man" arguments here.

Wrapping up his analysis of NT Wright's book, Pastor Beasley includes these words:

"With all of this we are reminded that what is at stake is the Gospel itself, and when men obfuscate the Gospel we must be careful to expose such obfuscation and refute it. I must contend that a man who is willing to sideline the bodily resurrection of Christ, as a non-essential, should not be so freely affirmed as a lover of the Gospel. By the evaluation of Holy Writ, I am of the conviction that Wright's indirect affirmations of heresy, along with his outright denials of imputed righteousness, place him in the category of those who are content to love and preach another Gospel."

Solid defense of justification

A solid, clear and concise critique of N.T. Wright's teaching on justification. Beasley does a great job of applying Scripture to defend the historic/orthodox view of justification. As a side issue, I appreciate how Beasley also spoke out against compromising the truth of the Bible in deference to Christian celebrities.

"While the focus of this book is on Mr. Wright and his teachings, this related problem of personality-adoration is proving to be a growing danger within the church, especially when it allows dangerous doctrines through the front door - or even the back door. As a pastor I have seen such troubling patterns for years, and it only appears to increase in the present day. In view of this, I must express great concern for those who may be tempted to follow and parrot similarly insipid responses to doctrinal error based upon their admiration of a man. As the followers of Christ, He must increase, but we must decrease."
