This is a great series

I like this series - it has great characters and plenty of action, lots of world building and genuinely worth a try if this is the genre you like.

So why only 3 stars?

I give 5 stars to books I just cannot put down, you know four o'clock in the morning with an exam in five hours, but no way can I stop reading.

I give 4 stars to books I will grudgingly put down at midnight for that exam or job interview tomorrow,

I give three stars to books that I like but can put down from time to time.

The reason for this rating was the fact that throughout the book there are these editing errors of words that get mixed up. For example sow vs sew. I find that when I read that the ladies are sowing by a window, I just crack up laughing at the thought of them throwing seeds round the room. Having cracked up laughing, I need to put the book down because the train of thought has been interrupted and I don't get that obsessive need to turn the page.

It is not recommended for those who hate these sorts of errors. I don't dislike such things, but they do make me giggle to the point where the flow of the novel is interrupted at that point.

Excellent series

An enjoyable tale. The story is fresh and the characters are memorable enough that the weaving of different perspectives works the best I've ever seen in a novel. There are a few spelling errors that cause a slight hitch in the immersion of the book series, but only a handful so it was not too bad.

A Pleasure!

I found this book randomly through the author's blog - she posted the first few chapters for free and I just happened upon it one day.

Once I finished the teaser, I was hooked and had to read more. I bought the Kindle version and continued the story. U.S. readers will notice some U.K. formatting (single quotes instead of double), but it's not a distraction from the story. The prose flows well. The dialogue is charming and realistic - I hear the voices of the English characters with their English accents in my head.

I was immersed in the main character's viewpoint, and it was almost painful at times (a good thing!) because it made me remember being in my own young mind years ago, starting out on my own, making mistakes and hasty decisions, not listening to my family and friends.

Denmark comes alive in this novel, and it's now on my list of countries to visit. The Danish language is offered in bite-sized bits and pieces, just enough to catch your interest but not become a distraction. The colorful houses, the shore, the people, I would love to see it all in person.

I don't want to spoil anything, but it was satisfying to see the main character grow, find her direction, and take charge of her life.

A great story. The characters will pop off the page - you will come to know them as real people. Enjoy!

The Cinnamon Snail - a real treat

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The characters were believable and the descriptions of Denmark detailed enough to make me feel the author knows it well. Having last visited as teenager, I found myself yearning to go back! The writing was pacy and at times genuinely funny and I honestly didn't know how the book would end until the very last page.

Extremely satisfying - more please!

A well-crafted, funny, romantic story. I was never quite sure how it was going to turn out until the last page.

Denmark sounds great - I'd love to visit it now.

YA-- A fascinating, readable volume that discusses the continual reshaping of the role of women in America from the 17th century to the 1980s. Evans' chapters roughly coincide with standard textbook organization of history (early settlers, Revolutionary era, 1845-1865, etc.), which makes the book useful to students of American history searching for another viewpoint. Unlike earlier histories, which only discuss women in the home, Evans shows the impact husbands, brothers, and sons had on the women's lives and thinking, and the effect of women's actions on men's politics. Although women's place in society remains unchanged in many basic ways, the intervening 300 years have seen great changes in the acceptance of women in public and political spheres. Evans makes these changes understandable to lay readers who may not yet have a sense of the totality of American history. Enriched by the fruitful scholarship of the last decade, this densely written book is a worthy execution of a difficult task. There are only a few comparable works: Glenda Riley's Inventing the American Woman (Harlan Davidson, 1986); Nancy Woloch's Women and the American Experience (Knopf, 1984); and Mary P. Ryan's most recent edition of Womanhood in America from Colonial Times to the Present ( Watts, 1979; 1983). Recommended.

Great as textbook

I am lucky enough to be using this book as the main textbook for a Women's History class. It is a very informative book that is also very easy to read.

A thorough and informative history of women in the U.S.

Evans' "Born for Liberty" is an excellent history of women in the U.S. The women's rights movements are often times portrayed as struggles of white middle-class women for white middle-class women. Evans includes the struggles and contributions of working-class women, black women, and immigrant women to the women's rights movements. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the struggle for equality and the role of women in shaping this country's history.
