Loved it!

I didn't discover this book until the entire series was published, so I was able to read all three installments in one day. I absolutely love the heroine! She is the right combination of spunk, vulnerability, bravery... A complex character who is "normal" but faced with extraordinary circumstances, and who shares her thoughts through excellent first person dialogue. I really liked the alien hero, too. I am not a fan of instant "she's MINE," stories. He slowly, reluctantly realizes that the "human" is the girl for him. I looked at author's home page but these are the only books listed. Please write more! I presume Jordan gets her own story? And maybe Vorak? Can't wait!

I was so lucky that I stumbled on these book *just* as the third was being released. As a three act story, this one was great!

For me, this is my screening process for alien romance abduction stories:
The author knows it's silly.
The reader knows it's silly.
Then everyone agrees that there's a collective, "hive-like-mind" understanding going on.
We all hop in the space ship and away we go, go, go!

Then I want engaging characters.

** A SHORT NOTE ABOUT SPOILERS
There's nothing below that should be surprising, considering the book titles are Captured, Sold, Save, but if you want a fresh read, now is the time to stop. And if you are stopping, my overall opinion is: Great story! Hope there's more!

** WARNING: THERE BE SPOILER-ISH CONTENT HEREAFTER!

The Alpha Male (Dakhar aka "Big Blue")
Has a dry sense of humor, impeccable comedic timing, believes grunts are a legitimate response to questions, doesn't say asinine things during sex (nothing too flowery or too "when did this become a 'spank me' story?") AND manages to get the girl with out once saying: I love you.

Even with all that, he's still a dirty bag. Come ON folks, he SOLD HER. His redemption throughout act three is satisfying for the reader and realistic for the characters.

The Gusty Girl (Dani)

Dani is such an awesome narrator. I just wanna share a bottle of wine with her and hear MORE. Her humorous sarcasm doesn't indicate a lack of understanding her perilous predicament. As a double act, she is the perfect spunky, self-deprecating comic to Big Blue's "straight man" role.

When she's "recovered" from the auction, her reaction was spot on. Tears & Gratitude > Confusing & Questioning > Anger & Betrayal

Lastly, I loved the way she filtered Dakhar for us. He SOLD her. I felt he needed to redeem himself to the reader as well, and Dani's view and understanding of him helped. (I forgive you, too, Big Blue!)

Lastly, the author accomplished something that I see few authors do with their leading ladies. She gave Dani a positive self-image, embracing her boobs, butt and thighs, AND (here's the awesome part), Dani exercised!

For me, a "curvey" heroine shouldn't get props for her "BBW and proud" mind-set while being irresponsible with her health. I understand that these characters are not meant to be professional athletes or runway models, but they can be healthy without slimming down to a waif...

WOW. SO off topic there. But, thanks Mara. Some writers miss that.

OVERALL:
Loved the books. Can't wait for the next installment with Jordan and Kaveth.

A good fun read

This is the first book I have read by Mara Frost and I am hooked. Love the banter between he alien captor and our human abductee. Lots of fun, lots of laughs and excellent storyline. Going over to get the rest of this series. Highly Recommend.

useful but waiting for the new edition

I found this book is useful for all the cardiology trainee as it is well written, easy to understood and there is many figures. However, it did not mention the new technology in the field of echocardiography such as the tissue doppler, contrast echo. I hope the next edition will include this and the illustrations will be more colorful.

Very helpful extra book.

It is always OK to use more than one book for study of a subject but for ECHO Feigenbaums is the bible. The 6th edition is a great book and DVD-ROM. Recommended for all levels of echocardiologists.

Ottos book is a helpful extra book. If you want to stick to one book get Feigenbaum's.

About the Author

Robin Waterfield is an author and translator. His many acclaimed translations for OWC include Plato's Republic and five other Plato translations, Plutarch, Herodotus, Aristotle, Xenophon and Euripides. Brian McGing has written articles on the Hellenistic period and recently completed a book on Polybius. He is Regius Professor of Greek at Trinity College Dublin.

Thorough and accurate

Waterfield is truly a master of translation. The notes, as usual for OWC, are in depth and fill in the blanks. As for Polybius himself, it is a wonderful masterpiece. One of the first "universal" historians, Polybius covers the known world during the Punic wars, and the Social wars. It is a very insightful view of the times. Plus, it is where we draw a lot of our Roman military knowledge. Polybius was a hands on historian, having fought in wars, and been in the ranks of politicians. I highly recommend reading this if you are a fan of ancient history. I would also highly recommend all that Robin Waterfield has translated, and noted.

1) This is very "easy reading" for ancient history. Part of the credit for that belongs to Polybius, who knows how to narrate. And part of the credit goes to Waterfield, who has done a good job of bridging the language gap. I remember reading in the preface something about his decision, for example, to break long sentences into shorter multiple sentences. Modern readers, after all, can't hold their breath at all as they wait for the period.

2) Waterfield's efforts to speak in modern idiomatic English also result in some troubling choices for a work of ancient history. For example, in one place Polybius is complaining about the way Fabius (another historian) has been less than completely reliable:
"In my opinion, however, readers can safely assume that Fabius is reliable more often than not, but they should not regard what he says as gospel; rather, they should base their conclusions on the facts themselves."

Uhm, did Polybius, writing in 150 B.C. tell his readers not to regard what Fabius writes "as gospel"? Okay, that communicates in modern English, but it is confusing historically.

3) On the other hand, Waterfield makes some excellent choices, too, as when Polybius suspends his account of the Hannibalic war to resume his account of the wars in Greece. At the edge of that theatre was a clash between the Rhodians (Rhodies?) and Byzantines. He describes the grudge carried in the heart of Prusias, one of the leaders of Rhodes:
"One of Prusias’ old grievances against the Byzantines was that they had failed to erect some statues of him; they had voted to do so, but then they had just let the matter slide and forgotten all about it. He also did not like the fact that they had done all they could to try to end the war between Achaeus and Attalus and reconcile them to each other; in his view, warm relations between Achaeus and Attalus would harm his interests in a number of ways. And he felt insulted by the Byzantines’ failure to send emissaries to him for his Soteria,* when apparently Attalus had received such a delegation from Byzantium for his games in honour of Athena." Uh, zowie, what? No emissaries sent for the Soteria? The footnote for "Soteria" tells us
"Soteria: a festival instituted in cities all over the Hellenistic world in thanks for deliverance from danger. The occasion and the details of Prusias’ festival are unknown." Polybius (2010-11-11). The Histories (Oxford World's Classics) (p. 466). Oxford University Press. Kindle Edition.

THANK YOU Robin Waterfield for leaving us the actual Greek word Soteria there instead of trying to translate it as "Freedom Festival" or "Deliverance Days" or something. Because this gives us a new depth of context for "Soteria" as it is used in the Bible, where it is everywhere and always translated "Salvation." For he says, "In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Cor. 6:2 (ESV) We would miss the possibility of making that connection in a poorer translation.

A rare instance where the Penguin has more!

Excellent translation (RW) and introduction (BM)...but doesn't include the fragments of later books as in the old Penguin edition. I generally love the high quality of these OWC editions, but in this rare instance I find myself supplementing with the Penguin.

This is a great series

I like this series - it has great characters and plenty of action, lots of world building and genuinely worth a try if this is the genre you like.

So why only 3 stars?

I give 5 stars to books I just cannot put down, you know four o'clock in the morning with an exam in five hours, but no way can I stop reading.

I give 4 stars to books I will grudgingly put down at midnight for that exam or job interview tomorrow,

I give three stars to books that I like but can put down from time to time.

The reason for this rating was the fact that throughout the book there are these editing errors of words that get mixed up. For example sow vs sew. I find that when I read that the ladies are sowing by a window, I just crack up laughing at the thought of them throwing seeds round the room. Having cracked up laughing, I need to put the book down because the train of thought has been interrupted and I don't get that obsessive need to turn the page.

It is not recommended for those who hate these sorts of errors. I don't dislike such things, but they do make me giggle to the point where the flow of the novel is interrupted at that point.

Excellent series

An enjoyable tale. The story is fresh and the characters are memorable enough that the weaving of different perspectives works the best I've ever seen in a novel. There are a few spelling errors that cause a slight hitch in the immersion of the book series, but only a handful so it was not too bad.
