A woman's struggle to deal with bipolar disorder as it affects all of her life's aspects; her jobs, her relationships, her ability to live her life normally. She is not diagnosed until middle-age; her diagnosis is not the end of her quest to find out what is wrong with her life. She has to then find a doctor and medications that will work in her individual case. The journey is long and the destination is in doubt. Bipolar disorder is a common, often undiagnosed mental illness that affects about four percent of the population. It is a challenge to get diagnosed, to find a doctor who understands and is able to treat the disorder, and to find the right combination of medications that will balance the mania and depression that are the hallmarks of the mental illness. A person with bipolar disorder cannot control his or her moods and consequently their lives spin out of control as they self-medicate with alcohol and drugs and make poor judgment calls. Many do not recognize that they have an illness and do not seek treatment. This book is an introduction to some of the problems and some of the solutions that can be found for bipolar disorder. It is fictional, but the situations are often found with people who have the disorder.

Jane Thompson's Reboot: A Novel of Bipolar Disorder resonated strongly with me. ...Without giving away the book's lovely ending: Marie finally finds a drug that works for her. As her moods stabilize, so does her life. She gests a raise at her job, makes friends and begins to enjoy going out. She starts to feel appreciated to who she is, and is happy. I wiped tears from my eyes and broke out laughing several times as I read "Reboot.: For those of us who are close to someone suffering from bipolar disorder, this book means a lot. Enthralling Storyline; Not Just a Review of Bipolar Disorder
By Willliam Russeth
A well-penned tale taking you into the deep corridors of a young woman's mind as she painfully struggles to gain control of her life, while unknowingly being accosted by the dynamics of bi-polar disorder. Marie is smart as a whip, a member of MENSA, yet, finds her world unraveling a little a more each year. Misdiagnosed and mistakenly medicated, she moves through jobs and relationships until she teeters on the edge of disaster.
The story is solid and stands on its own, but might be of particular interest to someone suffering from bi-polar disorder or someone acquainted with a person inflicted with the condition.

Reboot: a novel about bipolar disorder
By N. Park
Reboot: a Novel of Bipolar Disorder, by Jane Thompson
Reboot is not just about Bipolar Disorder, but the spare and painful story of a highly intelligent woman's struggle through the last half of the last century. Self-esteem in sexual relationships, and in finding jobs after our heroine gets a Master's degree, is crucial, but absent during the first part of the book. When she finally finds the right treatment for her particular disorder, her mood swings slow down and she starts acquiring a better life all around.
Anyone who has suffered through any emotional problems would enjoy this book for the sly humor, and the late victory of self-love that she needed at the beginning. It was hard-won, and that much more meaningful to see this personality finally acquire the self -respect that should have been her birthright. It's a fast-paced and enjoyable read.
